Liveblogging the Democratic Convention Aug 25th, PART II
6:47 Barack's sister gave a very sweet and touching speech.
Best line of the Convention so far came from Jessie Jackson Jr. (paraphrased): "I know Dr. King is smiling down on us here tonight since this is the first Democratic Convention in history within sight of a mountaintop."
That was the beginning of a very stirring speech...the man has his dad's talents without the baggage.
(Remember how loyal he's been to Obama, he condemned his dad's whispered comments.)
OK...this band they have kicks some serious ass. They are doing some amazing covers but adding their own personality to it. Really getting everyone moving (if I could dance holding a laptop, I would be.)
7:47--Frustration: trying to get a decent picture of Carolyn Kennedy and having the MSM completely clog the aisles and then snap at us when we are trying to get through (can you say "fire code?)
Tears: Watching the tribute to Ted Kennedy. Then he clearly got choked up after he was introduced and the entire audience screamed, clapped, shouted "Teddy" and lifted up "Kennedy" signs. I talked to CC from KUDO 1080 briefly today and she mentioned that she got choked up when she heard there would be a tribute to him. I couldn't help but cry as I watched. Ted Kennedy is the end of an era for folks my age...the end to our childhood.
8:06--Jim Leach, Republican (yes, I said Republican) Representative from Iowa is speaking--one of the two "prominent" Republicans who have come out and endorsed Senator Obama. The other is former mayor of Fairbanks, Jim Whitaker and he speaks tomorrow.
Quotes: "America has seldom faced more critical choices." "This is not the time for politics as usual." "Little is riskier to national interests than more of the same."
8:19--Claire McCaskill's kids introduced her and she's emphasizing the theme "that's the change we need." Claire says "I know that this son of a single mom will stand up for America's daughters..." Very nice pull at those who are still grumpy over Clinton.
BTW--our Alaska Clinton delegates met and decided ahead of time that no matter what happened at the Convention, they were supporting Obama. I've seen very little of these "PUMA" people...was just given a flier and that's about it.
Michelle Obama video on now--her mom is narrating. She'll be speaking soon.
8:28--Lovely blonde BBC reporter is broadcasting right next to me and the blonde chicky babe from Fox is on the other side. What a friggin' difference in intellect.
Craig Robinson is speaking right now--big brother to Michelle Obama. She's next.
BTW...I now know why they don't allow signs in here because they give you a new one every friggin' 10 minutes. They just handed out "Michelle" signs on long sticks.
Heh...new BBC reporter switched out the other one...still cute and blonde.
Craig quote about Barack: "He's a team player who approves the people around him."
8:38--BBC is on my nerves now, they keep redoing this spot. Michelle is speaking and it's distracting.
8:58--That was an excellent speech and rather than write about it, I got a chunk on video. I'll post it and all the photos when I get back to Kim and Erick's.

Michele Obama hit a freaking home run!
Beautiful speech!
I am jealous that I am not there to see it with you guys.
I cried at Kennedy's speech. It was very powerful. And I think Michele did an outstanding job!
Very glad you are blogging this. We are checking in often :)
"Jim Leach is only one of two prominent Republicans to endorse Obama? And the other is an ex Fairbanks mayor?
Leaving aside the question of the ex mayor of Fairbanks being a 'prominent Republican', how would you typify Charles Hagel, Richard Luger, former Bush White House intelligence adviser Rita E. Hauser, Lincoln Chaffee, Ike's grandaughter Susan Eisenhower, Tricia Mosley, or how about the former head of the Office of Legal Counsel for Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, Doug Kmiec?
What? ....are they just chopped liver, or are you really so content with your lax 'reportage' as to shortchange the Republican crossover to Obama reality in such fashion?
And diva, it's bad enough that the mainstream press talking heads constantly bombard us with their oohs and aahs about fashion and their personal attraction to physical attributes of their subjects, and endlessly subject their readers to their self-generated minutia about nothing relevant to anything other than their puerile interests,
......suppose you might spare us your giddy descriptions of what's 'lovely' or 'cute' in regards your analysis of the BBC reporter's appearances?
It's especially paradoxical after you try to call attention to comparisons of intellect immediately after you call the Fox reporter a 'chicky babe'....
I'm looking for a bit more depth than your juvenile interests in appearances of reporters, or do you think that kind of thing pads your resume in your quest to be accepted as 'one of the gang' of taking heads?
Gryphen--yup, I was in tears like half the women in the Pepsi Center. It was an amazing speech, the kids are just too-dang-cute and I thought the scheduling of the night leading up to her speech was perfect as well.
RCM--I cried when I was there...I cried when I watched it again on MSNBC...especially when he said that "nothing was going to stop him" from coming back to the Senate in January.
Anon--don't like it, don't read it
Hey CD,
Check out Officer Friendly here,

I think you should post the picture of the 80 year old man bent double, his arms behind his back, in place of the smiling cops you have now.
But your doing ok. Keep writing about Alaska issues. And dont waste time reposting a schedule. Tell us what you see, hear, and do.
FYI--my friends were there when the mini-riot started...by the protesters.
It's amazing how much you get to see that we only get bits and pieces of here on MSNBC or CNN. They cover the "major speeches", but like the one you mentioned with Obama's sister --I sure didn't see it anywhere. I haven't checked C-span yet to see if they're covering any of the other speakers but will try that tonight. Thanks for your excellent coverage!!

What's with all the hate? Celtic Diva is blogging the convention at her personal expense (with some support from the community), and she's reporting (a) what she sees and (b) what she thinks is interesting. That's her prerogative.
Have fun, and keep the posts coming!
